Wood Metal – European Supplier of CERRO® Alloy Fuses

More informationGet a quote

The use of Wood’s metal has become widespread in recent years for the manufacture of moulds, protective screens in radiotherapy, dies and electroforming mandrels. It is an alloy based on bismuth, lead, tin and cadmium, with a melting point of around 70°C. Metaconcept is a European supplier of CERRO® fusible alloys. We offer environmentally friendly alloys produced through a recycling process.

Characteristics of CERRO® Fusible Alloys from Wood’s Metal

Wood’s metal, also known as Lipowitz metal, is a low-melting-point metal used in various industrial applications. It differs from other fusible metals (rose metal, Galinstan, field metal, etc.) in its composition, which consists of 50% bismuth, 26.7% lead, 13.3% tin and 10% cadmium.

Wood’s metal has a melting point of around 70°C, making it a fusible metal. It is sold under various brand names, including Cerrobend, Pewtalloy, Bendalloy, Bolton 158 and MCP 158. It was discovered in 1860 by Barnabas Wood, an American dentist and inventor.

Wood’s metal has a density of 9.5 at 20°C. In terms of hardness, its Brinell hardness is 9.2. Its expansion rate after 2 minutes is 0.25. If you are looking for a supplier of Wood’s metal for your various industrial applications, please do not hesitate to contact Metaconcept.

Industrial Applications of CERRO® Wood’s Metal Fusible Alloys

CERRO® Wood’s metal fusible alloys are used in various industrial applications. In physics and radiotherapy, they are used to make protective covers for patient treatment. They are also used in the manufacture of fusible wires, for welding impellers and in stamping.

In addition, automatic fire extinguishing sprinklers are made from Wood’s metal. When the sprinkler nozzle made from Wood’s metal is exposed to a temperature of 70°C, it melts, allowing water to be sprayed.

Depending on its name, Wood’s metal can have slightly different characteristics. Their application may therefore vary. CERROLOW® metal is used, for example, for moulds and optical lens work. CERROSAFE® is used for moulds, sprinklers and models. CERROBEND® is used for various types of casings, tube bending and protective screens in radiotherapy. CERROTRU® alloy is used to manufacture moulds, castings, dies, models and electroforming mandrels. CERROCAST® metal is also used in the same way. Finally, CERROBASE® is useful for making dies.
